The thought of having a dentist use a large set of what look like pliers to pry a tooth from your jaw probably doesn’t thrill you. Unfortunately, however, this procedure is sometimes necessary for good oral health. The good news is that if you need to have a tooth pulled, we can make sure the process is as pain-free and effective as possible. Read on to discover the reasons you might find yourself in need of a dental extraction.
Why Your Dentist May Need to Pull a Tooth
Although permanent teeth should last a lifetime, several reasons can lead to the necessity of a tooth extraction. One very common reason involves a tooth that is too badly damaged (from trauma or decay) to be repaired. Other reasons include:
- Crowded mouth
- Infection
- Risk of infection
- Periodontal disease
About the Extraction Process
Dr. Fred Wong and his staff are well-prepared to perform dental extractions. Before pulling the tooth, he will inject you with a local anesthetic to numb the area where he will be working. In some cases, we may use a strong general anesthetic. This prevents pain throughout the body so you can you sleep through the procedure.
In cases where the tooth is impacted, the dentist will cut away gum and bone tissue covering the tooth. Then, using forceps, he will grasp the tooth and gently rock it back and forth to loosen it from the jawbone and ligaments holding it in place. Sometimes, it will be necessary to remove a hard-to-pull tooth in pieces.
Post Op Care
The treatment of extractions can be quite a painful experience for your child if not handled properly. The following information is to help you learn how to improve your child’s recovery.
Bleeding
Once the extractions are done, the bleeding will gradually decrease. The area of the extraction should be kept under constant pressure for at least thirty minutes to reduce the flow. The pressure can be applied by means of gauze provided by your orthodontist after you leave his office. If the bleeding starts again on removal of the gauze, apply the gauze again and bite on it for 8 to 10 minutes.
Swelling
Swelling in the extraction usually occurs when kids bite into the anesthetized area without being aware of it. To reduce the swelling, place an ice bag on the outside of the face near the extraction area. An appointment should be made so that the swelling can be evaluated. If the area of the extraction swells rapidly, give us a call.
Loose Space Maintainers
If you find that the fitting of the appliance is loose and it is possible to easily remove it from the mouth, take it out and put it away safely. Get the appliance re-cemented by making an appointment with us immediately.
Teeth are coming in
If you find that your child’s permanent teeth are erupting in place of the extracted baby teeth, make an appointment with us so that your child’s condition may be evaluated, and the space maintainers may be removed.
Pain
Soreness is often experienced by children in the mouth after treatment. The pain can be reduced by taking children’s Tylenol or Motrin. However, if the pain does not subsides after that, a follow up appointment should be made to evaluate the condition. In case of severe pain and soreness which is not reduced by medications, call our office for an appointment.
