FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How safe are dental X-rays?

The radiation you receive from dental X-rays is less than 1.6% of your daily background radiation exposure. You are exposed to the same level of radiation just from sunlight each day.

Lead aprons and low-radiation digital X-ray technology are used to ensure safety and further minimize the amount of radiation used, but there is extremely little risk to having dental X-rays taken.

How can parents help prevent tooth decay?

Teaching your child about oral health early is paramount to establishing a positive relationship in their mind with maintaining their dental health and preventing disease. Parents should take their children to the dentist regularly, beginning when their child’s first teeth emerge. This can help your child build a lifetime of healthy habits.

Are you taking new patients?

Yes, of course! We’re proud to be able to offer our services to others and are always open to new patients. Many of our patients are referrals from existing patients, friends and family.

What happens at my first visit?

At your first visit, we will have you fill out new patient forms to establish records on your medical history. We will also complete full dental records including any necessary intraoral photos, X-rays and gum probing measurements to assess gum health. After all proper records have been taken, we will determine a treatment plan to meet your needs and discuss your options with you.

How can I make my teeth whiter?

There are several methods to whiten teeth. We can whiten them in office or place veneers if whitening is not an option. In-house whitening treatments work well for most patients, and we send you home with custom whitening trays for touch ups that you can do from the comfort of your home. If you’re interested in teeth whitening, please request a whitening consultation.

What's the best kind of toothpaste?

Brushing technique is more important for your oral health than which toothpaste you use. That being said, toothpaste is important for its anti-cavity properties and tartar control. If you have sensitive teeth, we recommend trying over-the-counter sensitive formulation toothpaste such as Sensodyne for 3-4 months. If you develop build up or tartar quickly, we recommend trying baking soda toothpastes such as Arm ‘n Hammer. If your concern is keeping your teeth white, whitening toothpastes are a good option; however, we always warn patients that whitening toothpastes can be abrasive and may cause sensitivity. If you experience this, please discontinue using the whitening toothpaste and switch to a sensitive formula toothpaste.

Should I be using an electric or manual toothbrush?

Electric toothbrushes are great options for patients when used properly and with correct technique. There are numerous models on the market that work well. If you have a question about a specific brand, please ask during your appointment.

What do you offer for nervous, anxious patients?

Dental care should not be an unpleasant experience, so we provide a full array of options for nervous or anxious patients. We have several techniques to help such as conscious sedation. Contact us for more information if you’re interested in establishing a sedation consultation.
