Dental-Related Christmas or Hanukkah Gifts

With the holidays upon us, are you on a tireless search for the perfect gift or stocking stuffer? If so, take heart. We’ve got some great ideas for dental care-related gifts at several different price points, all of which are fun as well as functional!

Toothbrush

The perfect size for a stocking stuffer, a new toothbrush is a great gift, which pairs nicely with items that often share stocking space, like candy. Choose “soft” bristled brushes, because harder versions can damage enamel and even tear up gums. Ask your dentist or dental hygienist for recommendations based on your personal needs and habits. You should change your toothbrush at least once every three months, because old brushes can harbor bacteria. Also, worn bristles won’t effectively clean. Get creative by paying attention to color and design. If money’s no object, think the $4,000 Reinast Luxury Toothbrush. If that’s too rich for your blood (we get it and agree), pick up a superhero toothbrush for under $10.

Electric Toothbrush

A great gift idea for the entire family, an electronic brush from companies such as Sonicare or Oral B, provide clinically-proven better cleaning than regular manual toothbrushes or simpler electric toothbrushes. This type of toothbrush vibrates very quickly — between 30,000 and 40,000 strokes per minute. This speed helps bristles dislodge particles from the teeth. This type of brush is also useful because it stimulates the gums, which some studies say reverses gum disease. If you would rather contain costs, consider a disposable electric toothbrush, available in most drug stores and supermarkets.

Tooth Whitening

For the hard-to-shop-for on your list, such as teens or seniors, consider the gift of Zoom teeth whitening which can offer a bright smile after one or more painless treatments. You might be surprised at how reasonable in-office whitening treatments can be. Another great option is a gel-based tooth bleaching system, offered at Blue Ocean Dentistry. Or, you can pick up over-the-counter whitening products such as bleaching kits, whitening strips and gels. While the results of this type of product is inferior to a professional system, it is an affordable stocking stuffer. Sugar Free Gum

In lieu of sugar-laden snacks and sweats, opt for sugar free gum for kids’ stockings. Chewing stimulates saliva, which is helpful for rinsing and neutralizing acids in the mouth. And the “simulated sweet” of sugar-free gum produces more saliva than normal, staving off dry mouth…which is a breeding ground for oral bacterial. Give kids (and adults who have a sweet tooth) a gift that will promote healthy teeth and gums.

Dental Floss

Despite research that proves that flossing saves teeth and gum, many people fail to floss. While they leave the dentist’s office with good intentions, it’s easy to let life get in the way. Without proper flossing, bacteria between teeth can lead to tooth decay as well as gum disease. What’s more, poor mouth hygiene has been linked to heart disease and other ailments. So, routine flossing is one of the best ways to remove hidden plaque and bacteria. Slip a few floss containers into holiday stockings to encourage better family health. Or consider alternatives designed to ease the process, such as individually wrapped Plackers or a Waterpik

Egg Timer

Some people brush properly, but rush the job. A tooth timer can provide a visual reminder (especially for kids) of the time necessary to achieve adequate brushing. Most people think that two minutes is sufficient to clean teeth. But the actual truth is that each mouth is unique. Brush your teeth for as long as it takes to get them clean. So that is usually at least two minutes. The next time you are having your teeth cleaned at Blue Ocean Dentistry, ask your hygienist for recommendations relative for your dental regimen.

Gag Gifts

Besides practical gifts, you could go with a novelty approach. Consider the classic wind-up chattering teeth that you can set loose across the carpet, or put some “Billy Bob” fake teeth into your favorite uncle’s stocking for a few laughs. Give someone a molar-design vase to display flowers, as well as reminding the recipient that it may be time for a regular dental checkup.
