All About Dental Implants

Rise of Cosmetic Dentistry
Before King Louis the 14th, people let their teeth rot until they fell out of their gums or went to the dentist to have them pulled but not replaced. But because Louis was plagued by dental problems his entire life and because he placed such a premium on appearance, French society took notice, still opting for extraction but willingly investing in attractive false teeth. Born with two teeth already in his mouth, Louis’ teeth were eventually pulled. As a result, he suffered large maxillary bone defect, which negatively affected his ability to communicate.

Pierre Fauchard, now known as the Father of Modern Dentistry, gained notoriety during Louis’ reign because he was more than a dedicated teeth puller, like most of his dental peers. Although he developed five tools for extracting teeth, he also built the first dentist’s drill and developed methods for filling cavities.

Dentistry Today
Thankfully, if you lose teeth today, whether to periodontal disease or for other reasons, you have to set up an appointment to have your teeth extracted then have false teeth in place. Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth which look, feel, and function like natural teeth, dental implants are changing the way people live! Implants enable patients who have lost their teeth the ability to eat virtually anything and smile with confidence, knowing that teeth appear natural with facial contours preserved too.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants provide a foundation for replacement teeth made from tiny titanium posts which are surgically inserted into the jawbone in place of missing teeth. These metal anchors act as root substitutes for the teeth:

  • The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth.
  • Small posts that protrude through the gums are then attached to the implant.
  • The posts provide stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth.

The American Dental Association endorses two types of implants:

Endosteal implants — surgically implanted directly into the jawbone. Once the surrounding gum tissue has healed, a second surgery is needed to connect a post to the original implant. Finally, an artificial tooth (or teeth) is attached to the post-individually, or grouped on a bridge or denture.

Subperiosteal implants — these consist of a metal frame that is fitted onto the jawbone just below the gum tissue. As the gums heal, the frame becomes fixed to the jawbone. Posts, which are already attached to the frame, protrude through the gums. As with Endosteal implants, artificial teeth are then mounted to the posts.
